The Federal Road Safety Corps apprehended a total of 614,051 traffic violators nationwide in 2023, as reported by Saturday PUNCH.
According to the provided document, Lagos State led with 61,882 individuals apprehended for traffic violations, followed by the Federal Capital Territory and Kano with 43,682 and 38,154 offenders respectively.
Further details from the document indicated that Ogun accounted for 37,948 apprehensions, Kaduna 31,472, Oyo 31,447, Kwara 28,277, Osun 22,565, Kogi 22,377, Ondo 17,798, Niger 17,726, Delta 16,741, Edo 15,727, Rivers 14,925, Benue 14,030, Katsina 14,023, Ekiti 13,824, Yobe 13,734, Plateau 13,520, and Borno 12,469.
Others include Nasarawa with 12,414 offenders, Jigawa with 12,052, Cross River with 11,524, Bauchi with 10,027, Sokoto with 9,754, Zamfara with 9,608, Akwa-Ibom with 9,458, Adamawa with 8,873, Enugu with 7,217, Ebonyi with 6,550, Anambra with 6,746, Imo with 5,459, Taraba with 5,163, Gombe with 5,130, Kebbi with 3,952, Abia with 3,097, and Bayelsa with 2,683 offenders.
The offences leading to these apprehensions totaled 668,084 instances, including speeding, seatbelt violations, phone use while driving, overloading, and dangerous driving.
Furthermore, the records for 2023 revealed a decrease in traffic offenders compared to 2022, with 614,051 cases recorded against 661,231 in the previous year, representing a 7.1 percent decline.
