Navy Uncovers 15 Illegal Refineries With 2.7m Litres Capacity In Rivers

The Nigerian Navy has uncovered 15 sizable illegal refining facilities capable of processing 2.7 million liters of crude oil daily in Rivers state. Commodore Desmond Igbo, leading a team of journalists, disclosed this on Friday during a visit to the illicit sites in Degema community. He attributed the find to ongoing efforts under Operation Delta Sanity, initiated by Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogala to tackle oil theft.

“The uncovering of the illegal refining camps was made in line with the renewed mandate to combat and eliminate crude oil theft from the country.

“Upon receiving the CNS mandate, troops were deployed, and they uncovered 15 illegal refining camps, each equipped with six cooking pots and metal storage tanks,” he said.

Igbo emphasized that uncovering the illegal bunkering sites marked a pivotal advancement in the Federal Government’s campaign against oil thieves and economic saboteurs. He highlighted Ogalla’s directive to naval forces to halt assaults on the nation’s oil and gas infrastructure and protect maritime areas.

Expressing worry over the recurrent vandalism of pipelines and wellheads, Igbo noted the resulting environmental degradation. Despite the raid, he mentioned that no arrests were made, as laborers at the illegal refineries fled upon spotting the naval troops’ approach on numerous gunboats.
