Commercial activities came to a halt for over three hours in Benin City Centre, commonly known as Ring Road and surrounding streets, as the Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOCSO) staged an early morning protest against the economic hardships in Nigeria.
They urged President Bola Tinubu to address the issue of hunger or resign. The protesters carried placards with messages such as “Nigerians are starving to death,” “Tinubu, end hunger in Nigeria,” “FG, end hunger now,” and “Tinubu, let Nigerians breathe.”
Interim TEC Chairman of EDOCSO, Leftist Austine Enabulele, stated to the press that the 14-day ultimatum given to President Tinubu to address the economy had expired without any action taken to alleviate hunger in the country.
He said “We cannot take the pain anymore. Enough of the hunger, enough of the hardship, enough of bad governance in Nigeria.
“If he can’t fix the problems of Nigeria, he should resign quickly with his vice president, Shettima and let us conduct a fresh election because Nigerians are dying every day, children are now becoming orphans because their fathers are dying of hardship in Nigeria.
“We are saying enough is enough. If he can’t fix the problems of Nigeria, he should resign and go”, Enabulele said.
Additionally, Pastor Azemhe Azena, the leader of Omega Fire Ministry in Benin and the gubernatorial aspirant of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), participated in the protest against the prevailing economic challenges in the nation.
He emphasized that the situation is deteriorating rapidly and urged governments at all levels to take decisive actions to address it. Azena highlighted the burden faced by clergy members due to the increasing demands from their congregations.
