The Nigerian Army uncovered more than 40 illegal crude oil wells in the Rumuekpe community of Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers State. The discovery was made during an operation led by Major General Jamal Abdusallam, the General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army 6 Division.
Major General Abdusallam highlighted the wells, approximately 40 feet deep, as a new tactic by criminals to extract crude oil from underground reserves. He stressed the importance of this finding in combating oil theft and illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta, expressing concerns about environmental and safety hazards.
Major General Abdusallam pledged to inform relevant authorities and deploy troops to prevent further exploitation of the area. Several suspects were captured at the scene and are under military custody for ongoing investigations. One suspect, speaking anonymously, confessed that the wells were allegedly owned by various families in the community.
Describing the risky digging process, the suspect noted dangers such as gas inhalation and suffocation. He disclosed that workers were paid around N40,000 per well, underscoring the communal ownership of the resource and the perilous nature of their activities.
