The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has mandated telecom service providers to block subscribers who have not linked their phone numbers to their National Identification Numbers (NIN) by February 28, 2024.
Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, emphasized the importance of this directive for national security during the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair. He reiterated that the deadline for telecom operators to implement this action remains February 28th.
“To this end, the National Communication Commission has directed all telecommunication operators to bar phone lines of subscribers whose lines are not linked to their NINs on or before February 28, 2024,” he added.
The head of NCC also revealed that by 2023, the telecommunications sector accounted for 13.5% of the country’s GDP. Maida emphasized NCC’s dedication to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring their contentment. He highlighted the commission’s efforts to establish an accessible and fair environment for obtaining affordable services, thereby bolstering the nation’s economic development.
