Italy’s anti-doping tribunal has handed France’s football standout, Paul Pogba, a four-year suspension from the sport following a positive test for testosterone in August, as confirmed by his club, Juventus, on Thursday.
According to a club spokesperson, Juventus was informed of the tribunal’s ruling against the 30-year-old, who had been under provisional suspension since September.
“We received notification from the tribunal this morning,” the spokesman said. Italy’s anti-doping body did not immediately respond when contacted by AFP.
Anti-doping prosecutors sought a four-year suspension for the former Manchester United midfielder, who tested positive after Juventus’s opening Serie A match against Udinese on August 20, where he was an unused substitute.
A month later, a B sample confirmed the presence of testosterone, leading to his provisional suspension. Pogba’s representatives claimed the testosterone stemmed from a doctor-prescribed food supplement during a consultation in the United States.
Returning to Juventus in 2022 after a six-year stint at United, Pogba played a crucial role in France’s 2018 World Cup victory, scoring in the final against Croatia. However, his doping incident coincided with a challenging first season back at Juve, marked by limited appearances and off-field troubles, including an extortion investigation.
