On Thursday, the Senate instructed both the Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Force to recruit at least 10 candidates from each of Nigeria’s 774 local government councils as part of their yearly recruitment procedures.
This decision, stemming from a motion by Sen. Emmanuel Udende Memga of Benue North East, emphasizes the importance of adhering to the Federal Character Principle in constable recruitment.
The Upper Chamber also tasked the Committees on Police Affairs and Legislative Compliance with ensuring adherence to this directive. Additionally, a bill sponsored by Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin, aimed at establishing the National Assembly Budget and Research, passed its second reading on February 29, 2024. If enacted, this bill will furnish the National Assembly with impartial, timely, and objective analysis crucial for economic and budgetary decisions.
