EFCC Intercepts 21 Food Trucks Heading To Cameroon, Chad, Others

The EFCC has intercepted 21 food trucks bound for neighboring countries, including N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central African Republic, and Cameroon. The seizure was announced via a statement on Tuesday, with the anti-graft agency revealing that the interception was made by operatives of the EFCC Maiduguri Zonal Command.

“The trucks were intercepted in a sting operation at major exit routes along Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads, Borno State,” the statement read.

“Investigation showed food items cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of operatives of the Commission.

“Further checks showed that the Waybills covering the goods carried by trucks indicated their destinations as N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central Africa Republic, and Cameroon respectively.

The commission stated that the apprehension of the trucks aims to curb food insecurity caused by the dubious activities of smugglers nationwide. It was mentioned that the detained suspects are undergoing profiling, with the agency pledging to prosecute them once investigations conclude. This seizure follows a surge in food prices in Nigeria, with inflation hitting 29.90 percent, resulting in heightened living costs and sporadic protests in various regions.

Instances of warehouse and food truck theft have also been reported. Nonetheless, the Federal Government has initiated measures to mitigate the impact of high living costs and will commence nationwide grain distribution later this week. President Bola Tinubu’s administration has consistently urged patience for its reform efforts, including the floating of the naira and the cessation of the subsidy regime, affirming its commitment to these policies.
