South Africa has implemented new visa rules aimed at skilled foreign remote workers, paving the way for the introduction of digital nomad visas. These visas are available to foreigners earning over R1m a year (about $53,665) who wish to relocate to South Africa.
While the government has not officially confirmed these changes, it’s been reported that the digital nomad visa replaces the critical skills visa.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi drafted the new regulations, which were published in February for public feedback until March 29. This move has sparked mixed reactions locally, with some seeing it as a way to attract international tech talent and others concerned about potential increases in living expenses and tax issues.
The introduction of the digital nomad visa is part of South Africa’s efforts to attract tech talent, with proposed changes including a point-based system for work visas and the introduction of digital nomad visas for those earning at least R1 million ($52,575) per year.
Questions have been raised about whether the salary requirement refers to gross or net income and if freelancers would qualify for the visa. President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted in February the need for skilled individuals to boost the country’s economy.
South Africa’s adoption of the digital nomad visa puts it in line with other African countries offering remote work visas, such as Cape Verde, Mauritius, the Seychelles, and Namibia.
