The Nigeria Labour Congress informed the Labour Party’s presidential candidate that he can depart from the NLC if he chooses. Benson Upah, the NLC spokesperson, revealed this during an interview with Punch on Sunday.
The NLC leadership pledged relentless efforts to remove Julius Abure from his position as national chairman of the Labour Party. Despite the contested national convention that reinstated Abure, Upah emphasized that the NLC would not acknowledge his leadership as legitimate.
He said, “Our position on this matter is clear and has not changed. Abure remains unknown to us. It is not a question of removal. As far as we know, he does not exist.”
Meanwhile, a collective of retired workers known as the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists has demanded the resignation of both the embattled national chairman of the party and the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, citing their contentious leadership struggle.
Obi has clashed with the LP leadership regarding the handling of the convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, despite his calls for broader consultation.
The former Anambra governor, during an X Space session last Friday, voiced his frustrations, explaining his absence from the national convention where Julius Abure was re-elected as the party’s national chairman due to the leadership’s failure to heed his plea for wider consultation.
This remark has intensified earlier rumors suggesting that the LP presidential candidate may be exploring other political platforms despite being assured of the 2027 ticket at the convention.
However, Upah dismissed debates about whether Obi should stay or leave the party, asserting that the former governor has the freedom to determine his future. He emphasized that the NLC cannot obstruct the presidential candidate should he opt to join another political platform, describing Obi as an asset and affirming that the congress would not impede his departure if he chose to leave.
“The right of choice is available to Mr Obi. If he chooses to leave the party, that is his preference. We can’t sit in judgment over him on that. But if he chooses to remain, of course, Peter Obi is an asset any day. I rest my case on that,” he said.
