Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has announced that the Federal government will penalize electricity distribution companies (DisCos) that fail to provide 20 hours of electricity to customers in the Band A category. Adelabu made this statement on Tuesday through X.
He emphasized that the recent increase in tariffs applies specifically to electricity consumers in the Band A category who receive a minimum of 20 hours of power supply.
Last Tuesday, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised the electricity tariffs for customers in the Band A category to N225 per kilowatt-hour from N66/kWh, sparking widespread criticism among Nigerians.
Adelabu highlighted some of the provisions in the tariff adjustment reform.
“Federal Government to save N1.5 trillion with tariff adjustment.
“Federal Government still subsidizing Bands below A.
“Pricing changes will help increase liquidity to the NESI.
“DisCos will be sanctioned for supplying less than 20 hours of electricity to Band A customers”.
He, nonetheless, refrained from specifying the type of sanction.
In the meantime, the Nigerian Society of Engineers urged NERC to enforce stringent penalties on DisCos that do not provide Band A customers with 20 hours of power.
