Fernandes Scores Twice In Man Utd 2-2 Draw At Bournermouth

Manchester United faced another setback in their quest for Champions League qualification as Bruno Fernandes’ brace only managed to salvage a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday. The Cherries led twice through Dominic Solanke and Justin Kluivert, with VAR controversy denying Bournemouth a late penalty opportunity.

With this result, United remains ten points behind Aston Villa and Tottenham in the race for a top-four finish, with six games remaining. The Red Devils, under the management of Erik ten Hag, have won only once in their last seven Premier League matches, raising doubts about ten Hag’s future at the club.

Once again, United’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed, reminiscent of their earlier 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

Despite missing key defenders like Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof due to injuries, French teenager Willy Kambwala’s mistake led to Solanke’s opening goal. United equalized against the run of play through Alejandro Garnacho’s deflected cross, which Fernandes volleyed home. However, Bournemouth quickly regained the lead as Kluivert exploited the space in United’s defense to score.

With each passing week and disappointing performance, the uncertainty surrounding Ten Hag’s future as Manchester United’s manager grows.

However, the Dutchman’s bold halftime substitution, replacing Garnacho with Amad Diallo, proved fruitful. Diallo, known for his decisive goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final, contributed to United’s equalizer as his shot deflected off Adam Smith’s hand in the box.

Bruno Fernandes calmly converted the resulting penalty. Bournemouth believed they had a penalty in stoppage time when Kambwala fouled Ryan Christie, but VAR intervened, ruling the foul occurred just outside the box. This draw leaves Bournemouth in 12th place, eight points behind United in the race for European qualification.
