In a moving demonstration of compassion and commitment to social responsibility, H.E. Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Delta State, chose to celebrate his April 16, 2024 birthday among the inmates of the Warri Correctional Center. Born in 1968 in Oporoza, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, Deacon Otuaro is known for his annual tradition of sharing his birthday with the incarcerated, underscoring his belief in the inherent potential and dignity of all individuals.
This year’s celebration involved a substantial contribution of items crucial to the inmates’ welfare, including 200 pieces of mattresses, an array of wrappers for female inmates, packs of soft drinks, and a variety of toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and essential drugs, all worth hundreds of thousands. These donations are part of a sustained effort to improve living conditions within the facility.
During the event, Deacon Otuaro inspired the inmates with a speech emphasizing respect for the donated materials, particularly those procured on the advice of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. He admonished the inmates against destructive behaviors that could negate their own benefits from such generosity. Furthermore, he pledged to enrich the correctional center with new computers for a revitalized computer center, aiming to re-engage trainers to prepare inmates for external examinations like WAEC and JAMB, thus equipping them for a constructive life post-release.
Pastor Yomi Morakinyo of the Christ Embassy Effurun chapter, who also spoke at the event, urged the attendees to hold onto their faith, abandon misdeeds, and embrace a new beginning, emphasizing God’s enduring love for every individual.
In expressing institutional gratitude, Mr. Edo Joseph, the Deputy Controller of the Warri Correctional Center, commended Deacon Otuaro’s unwavering commitment to inmate welfare, marking notable enhancements in healthcare, job opportunities, and educational access as hallmarks of Otuaro’s contributions.
Dignitaries at the commemoration included Hon. Deacon Progress, Special Advisor to the Governor of Delta State on Community Enterprise Development, and other noteworthy figures such as Patrick Ulinkifun, Chaplain Warri Correctional Center, Pst. Marylyn Ogaga, Pastor Ikare Christmas, Pastor Ufuoma Irikefe, and an ensemble of Pastors and aides to the former Deputy Governor. Their presence served to reinforce the message of solidarity and benevolence embodied by Deacon Otuaro’s actions.
The birthday celebration attracted public interest not just for its charitable spirit, but also as a testament to the collective power of community support in fostering hope, reform, and positive transformation for those seeking a second chance at life.
