The Nigerian government has urged for restraint amid the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. Waffi TV reported on Sunday that Iran launched drone and missile attacks towards Israel on Saturday night.
Tehran accused Israel of conducting an airstrike on its consulate in Damascus earlier this month, resulting in the deaths of seven officers from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force. The Israeli military claimed to have intercepted 99% of the incoming projectiles.
Waffi TV also stated that the G7 leaders condemned Iran’s retaliatory strike on Israel, reiterating their support for Israel’s security. The G7 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the European Union as an additional non-enumerated member.
In a statement released by the spokesperson for the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Francisca Omayuli, the Nigerian government emphasized the responsibility of both nations to consider the universal dedication to peacefully resolving conflicts for the promotion of global peace and security.
The statement read, “The Federal Government of Nigeria joins other Members of the International Community to call on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint, as diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ease tension and avoid a wider conflict in the Middle East.
“In this critical period, it behoves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, for the advancement of global peace and security.”
