Nationwide Blackout As National Grid Collapses Again

……..Benin Disco drops to 40 MW

Yesterday, both homes and businesses experienced extended power outages due to two separate collapses of the nation’s national grid within a month. The most recent collapse, which occurred on Thursday, March 28, 2024, marked the second time in less than a month.

This incident followed closely after the contentious tariff hike for Band A power consumers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). According to data from the National System Operator, the grid failed around 3 a.m. TCN, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, was working to restore the grid, with power supply reaching 250 MW.

The highest loads were in Abuja and Lagos Disco, each with 80 MW, followed by Ibadan Disco with 50 MW, and Benin Disco with 40 MW. Among the generating plants, only Ibom Power and Okpai Gas were contributing, with 59.50 MW and 117.00 MW, respectively.

Efforts to contact TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mr. Ndidi Mbah, for comment on the situation were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
