President Joe Biden cautioned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States would not participate in a retaliatory action against Iran, which is favoured by Netanyahu’s war cabinet. This warning followed a significant drone and missile attack on Israeli territory.
The potential for a full-scale conflict between these longstanding Middle Eastern adversaries, potentially involving the United States, has heightened tensions in the region, prompting appeals for restraint from global powers and Arab nations to prevent further escalation.
“The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting the real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told a Security Council meeting called on Sunday in response to the strikes.
Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Robert Wood, urged the council to strongly condemn Iran’s attack. He stated that Washington would investigate further, unspecified actions at the United Nations to ensure Iran is held responsible and cautioned against any further acts of aggression.
“Let me be clear: if Iran or its proxies take actions against the United States or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible,” he said.
While emphasizing its aim to prevent escalation, Washington, represented by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, engaged with counterparts from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan.
They underscored the imperative of avoiding escalation, highlighted the significance of a unified diplomatic approach, and reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Israel’s defense.
