An investigation suggests that Karl-Erivan Haub, a German billionaire who disappeared under mysterious circumstances on Switzerland’s Matterhorn peak six years ago, may be living with a Russian mistress in Moscow.
Haub, a retail tycoon aged 58 at the time, vanished in April 2018 while training for a ski mountaineering race in Zermatt, Switzerland. He was last seen heading up the mountain in a lift one morning, which was unusual for him as he was known for being safety-conscious and well-prepared, and he never returned to his hotel.
Authorities launched a six-day search which saw five helicopters and teams of alpine rescuers canvas the area, but his body was never found.
A former managing director and part owner of German supermarket and retail giant Tengelmann Group, Haub was declared dead by a Cologne court three years later, leaving behind a wife, two children and a company of some 75,000 employees.

His younger brother Christian swore in a courtroom in 2021 that there was no indication the Alpinist, whose net worth was estimated at £5.2 billion, remained alive.
A comprehensive investigation led by German broadcaster RTL now claims to have pinpointed Haub’s whereabouts in Moscow, suggesting that the tycoon is accompanied by a much younger woman named Veronika Ermilova. Haub, who left behind his wife, two children, and a company with approximately 75,000 employees, saw his younger brother, Christian Haub, take over as the sole CEO of Tengelmann following his disappearance.
In 2021, Christian testified in court, asserting that there was no evidence to suggest that the billionaire, with an estimated net worth of £5.2 billion, was alive. Nonetheless, a recent inquiry by RTL purportedly uncovered Haub’s presence in Moscow, reportedly engaged in a clandestine relationship with Ermilova, who allegedly has ties to a Russian event management agency.
According to RTL and media outlet Stern, Haub, now 64 years old, is claimed to have made 13 phone calls to Ermilova’s phone in the three days leading up to his disappearance in 2018, including one conversation lasting over an hour, prompting suspicions of a potential plan to stage his own demise with assistance from Moscow and Ermilova.
