The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has signed a bill into law that aims to ban the popular social media app TikTok.

The legislation, which was previously passed by the U.S. Congress, requires ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company based in China, to sell the app within nine months or face a ban in the U.S.

Biden signed the bill, which was attached to a $95 billion foreign aid package approved by Congress this week, on Wednesday. The aid package includes increased funding for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

In response, TikTok has announced plans to challenge the law in court. TikTok spokesperson Alex Haurek criticized the law as “unconstitutional” and stated that the company would take legal action against it.

This development follows TikTok’s successful legal battle against former President Donald Trump’s attempt in 2020 to force the sale of the app through an executive order. Trump’s order would have banned any U.S.-based transactions with ByteDance if the company did not sell TikTok within 45 days.
