The American International School of Abuja (AISA) has contacted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), requesting genuine banking information for reimbursing fees previously paid for the children of the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Allegedly, Bello paid $720,000 in advance school fees for five of his children using state funds.

The children, enrolled in grades 2 to 8, attend the school.

On April 17, EFCC agents attempted to apprehend Bello at his Abuja residence regarding an alleged N80.2 billion fraud. During the operation, the current Governor of Kogi, Usman Ododo, reportedly escorted Bello away.

In a letter to the Lagos zonal commander of EFCC, the school stated that $845,852 had been paid in tuition fees from September 7, 2021, to present. AISA indicated a refund amount of $760,910 after deducting fees for educational services already provided.

“Please forward to us an official written request, with the authentic banking details of the EFCC, for the refund of the above-mentioned funds as previously indicated as part of your investigation into the alleged money laundering activities by the Bello family,” the letter reads.

“Since the 7th September 2021 to date, $845,852.84 (Eight Hundred and Forty-Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Two US Dollars and eighty-four cents) in tuition and other fees has been deposited into our Bank account.

“We have calculated the net amount to be transferred and refunded to the State, after deducting the educational services rendered as $760,910.84. (Seven Hundred and Sixty Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ten US Dollars and Eighty-Four cents).

“No further additional fees are expected in respect of tuition as the students’ fees have now been settled until they graduate from ASIA.”

The school mentioned that it would alert the anti-corruption agency if any additional payments were made by the Bello family.

In a statement signed by Greg Hughes, AISA further stated, “On Friday, August 13, 2021, Ali Bello reached out to the school, expressing the intention to prepay the family’s school fees until the students complete high school.” Subsequently, the EFCC has issued a warrant for Bello’s arrest, and the Nigeria Immigration Service has placed the former governor on a watchlist.
