Resident doctors at DELSUTH have initiated a one-week cautionary strike due to the alleged insensitivity of the Delta State Government towards issues impacting patient care and resident doctors’ training.
Concerns raised include the declining infrastructure and the malfunctioning equipment crucial for diagnosing and treating various medical conditions.

Dr. Harrison Adja, Dr. Maurice Oghenekaro, and Dr. Erhire Clinton Umukoro, in a joint statement as representatives of ARD DELSUTH Congress, announced the commencement of the strike at 8 am on Friday, April 26, 2024.
According to the association: “Despite recent renovations, the ongoing decay of the hospital is glaringly evident. The elevator has never functioned, plumbing remains as problematic as it was before the refurbishment, fixtures are falling apart and the air conditioning units and fans have all malfunctioned. Working within the hospital has become an extremely distressing experience due to these issues.”
Highlighted among the outdated equipment are the CT scan machine, MRI scan machine, mammography machine, endoscopy machine, orthopaedic equipment, anaesthetic machine, ventilators, multiparameter monitors, and electroencephalography machine, among others.
Additionally, the doctors cited inadequate power supply and rising electricity costs from BEDC supplied to the hospital, exacerbated by inadequate financial backing from the state government, as significant grievances.
Despite this, the resident doctors at DELSUTH indicated their readiness to make sacrifices to ensure the delivery of optimal patient care.
“Nevertheless, we urge all concerned parties to impress upon the state government the importance of adequately funding the highest referral centre in Delta State,” the statement concluded.
