The Federal Government has issued a new directive to all Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) and Medical Directors (MDs) of Federal Tertiary Hospitals, instructing them to exclusively purchase needles and syringes from locally approved manufacturers by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The directive, conveyed in a circular signed by Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health, aims to bolster local content and shield domestic manufacturing industries from the influx of foreign products.

The circular, dated March 28, 2024, referenced as HMSH&SW/CMDs/MDs/FTHs/CIRCULAR/S&N/03, also outlined NAFDAC’s role in ceasing the issuance of licenses for the importation of foreign-made needles and syringes.

Alausa highlighted the plight of local pharmaceutical industries producing these medical supplies, noting that many have struggled or closed down due to the influx of substandard foreign products.

“Mr. President has directed that this must stop.”

The circular reads in parts: “In my virtual meeting with all of you, we all agreed to take the necessary steps to immediately remedy this sad situation.

“Pursuant to this NAFDAC has been mandated to stop issuing licences for the importation of foreign manufactured needles and syringes.

“It is also to de-list companies involved in the importation of these products going forward.

“Furthermore, all our tertiary hospitals are hereby directed to procure Needles and Syringes for your hospital needs from only the NAFDAC-approved local manufacturers listed below are listed either directly or through any of their vendors. EL-Salmat Pharmaceuticals Company Ltd Block, Brand Name: Salmaject, HMA Medical Ltd., with brand Name: Deleject and Afrimedical Manufacturing & Supplies Ltd.”

The circular also included a list of distributors for the mentioned companies in several states across the Federation, facilitating easier procurement processes within various institutions.
