Tinubu Targets Increased Gas Production, To Commission Three Plants In Delta, Imo

These projects are anticipated to collectively produce an estimated output of 1,400 million standard cubic feet per day.

President Bola Tinubu is set to commission three significant gas infrastructure projects led by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited and its collaborators. These include the AHL Gas Processing Plant 2 in Delta State, the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, and the ANOH-OB3 CTMS Gas Pipeline Projects in Imo State.

These projects are anticipated to collectively produce an estimated output of 1,400 million standard cubic feet per day.

Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement released on Friday titled ‘President Tinubu to commission critical gas infrastructure projects.’

“The projects support the federal government’s effort to grow value from the nation’s gas assets while eliminating gas flaring…and deepen domestic gas supply as a critical enabler for economic prosperity,” said Ngelale.

The AHL Gas Processing Plant 2 serves as an extension to the Kwale Gas Processing Plant, which presently provides approximately 130 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) of gas to the local market. Designed to handle 200 MMscf/d of rich gas and transmit lean gas via the OB3 Gas Pipeline, the processing plant is already injecting gas and is expected to increase to 180 MMscf/d by the end of May.

Ngelale said this additional gas supply will “support further rapid industrialisation of Nigeria” and also “produce about 160,000 MTPA of Propane and 100,000 MTPA of Butane, which will reduce the dependency on LPG Imports.”

The AHL Gas Plant is under development by AHL Limited, a joint venture jointly owned by NNPC Limited and SEEPCO. On the other hand, the ANOH gas plant is a comprehensive facility with a capacity of 300 MMscf/d, intended for processing non-associated gas from the Assa North-Ohaji South field in Imo State. This plant will yield dry gas, condensate, and LPG, significantly enhancing domestic gas supply, thereby boosting power generation and expediting industrialization.

The ANOH Gas Plant is being constructed by ANOH Gas Processing Company, a joint venture co-owned by NNPC Limited and Seplat Energy Plc in equal parts. Having achieved mechanical completion in December 2023, NNPC is currently finalizing pre-commissioning activities.

Lastly, there’s the ANOH-OB3 CTMS Gas Pipeline Project, entailing the engineering, procurement, and construction of the 36”x23.3km ANOH-OB3 Project, as per the Presidency’s announcement.

“The Transmission Gas Pipeline will evacuate dry gas from the Assa North-Ohaji South primary treatment facility to the OB3 Custody Transfer Metering Station for delivery into the OB3 pipeline system,” read the statement.

An estimated 600 MMscf/d is anticipated to be accessible from two distinct 2 x 300 MMscf/d capacity gas processing production trains operated by AGPC & SPDC JV. The Anoh-OB3 PPL, spanning 23.3km, is set for mechanical completion by May 15, 2024.

Upon commissioning, these projects are expected to augment gas supply to the domestic market by approximately 500 MMscf/d, fostering a conducive investment environment and fostering balanced economic growth, as confirmed by the Presidential Spokesman.
