Yiaga Africa has proposed a four-year term for elected local government officials to maintain consistency in tenure across all government levels in Nigeria.
This proposition was made during a roundtable discussion on legislative reforms for enhanced local government elections in Lagos.
Mbamalu emphasized the necessity of amending certain electoral laws to synchronize with those of 2022, aiming to tackle issues like insufficient autonomy, varying tenures, and inadequate funding plaguing local government elections.
“Some states have not had local government elections for over eight to 14 years, which is wrong. Most local governments elections in Nigeria are run on caretaker committees rather than by elected chairpersons,” she said.
She added, ”We are proposing a clear timeline for local government elections to be conducted . Local government Elections should be conducted not earlier than 150 days, and not later than 30 days to the expiration of term of the current local government election.
“Also, that every four years, local government elections will be conducted in Lagos state and in every other state.
“Notice of elections should be given 360 days to the elections. This will allow citizens, parties, and electoral commissions adequate time for planning.”
