Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his inauguration for a new six-year term, emphasized the West’s choice between confrontation and cooperation.
The ceremony took place at the Kremlin on Tuesday, with notable absences from the United States and its allies. Reuters notes that amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin expressed gratitude to Russia’s soldiers and highlighted his recent landslide re-election as a testament to the nation’s unity and progress.
“You, citizens of Russia, have confirmed the correctness of the country’s course. This is of great importance right now, when we are faced with serious challenges,” he told dignitaries in a gilded Kremlin hall where a trumpet fanfare sounded to greet his arrival.
“I see in this a deep understanding of our common historical goals, a determination to adamantly defend our choice, our values, freedom and the national interests of Russia.”
In March, Putin secured another six-year term in Russia’s carefully orchestrated election, winning by a vast margin. This victory potentially extends his rule until at least his 77th birthday.
The absence of viable opposition candidates, due to various factors such as death, imprisonment, exile, or disqualification, coupled with the suppression of dissent since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, left Putin facing no significant challenge to his leadership.
