Court Restrains PDP From Removing Acting Chairman Damagum

The judge instructed the plaintiffs to provide an undertaking to compensate the respondents if it’s found that the order was improperly granted.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a restraining order preventing the Peoples Democratic Party from ousting its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

This ruling, delivered on May 3 and shared with the press on May 8, prohibits the appointment, selection, or nomination of any replacement for Damagum until the motion on notice is heard and determined.

Justice Peter Lifu granted the interim order and scheduled further proceedings for May 14. The order was granted in response to a suit filed by Senator Umar Maina and Alhaji Zanna Gaddama. Defendants in the case include the PDP, its National Working Committee, National Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The judge instructed the plaintiffs to provide an undertaking to compensate the respondents if it’s found that the order was improperly granted.

Pressure had mounted for Damagum’s removal ahead of the PDP National Executive Council meeting on April 18, particularly from party members in the North Central zone. However, the party resolved to retain Damagum in office, with the NWC expressing confidence in his leadership.
