Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, under military leadership, have concluded arrangements to establish a confederation, opting to strengthen their connections with Russia instead of their former colonial power, France.
The foreign ministers of these nations convened in Niamey, Niger, on Friday to formalize the creation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Niger’s Foreign Minister, Bakary Yaou Sangare, announced late Friday that the purpose of the meeting was to finalize the draft document outlining the establishment and implementation of the AES Confederation.
“The objective was to finalise the draft text relating to the institutionalisation and operationalisation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)”, said Sangare as he read the final statement late Friday.
He said the text would be adopted by the heads of state of the three countries at a summit, without specifying the date, Barron’s Reports.
Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop after meeting General Abdourahamane Tiani, the head of Nigerien military regime said that it is very clear that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has been born today.
“We can consider very clearly, today, that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has been born,” Diop said after meeting General Tiani, the head of Nigerien military regime.
Present at the meeting as the third foreign minister was Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore from Burkina Faso.
For years, the Sahel region has endured deadly jihadist attacks, which they attribute to France’s inability to contain.
In late January, the three nations announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing its perceived French influence, and expressed intentions to establish their own regional alliance.
