President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of new members to the governing boards of 111 Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Following his endorsement of a list of nominees selected by the Federal Ministry of Education, President Tinubu authorized the appointment of 555 individuals to serve as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of the governing boards of these 111 tertiary institutions nationwide.
An announcement by the Ministry of Education, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, detailed the appointment of a chairperson and four members for each institution.
Walson-Jack stated in the advertorial that “The inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils will take place on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja. Both events will commence at 9:00am daily.”
This announcement came a few days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to strike.
Waffi TV previously reported that ASUU had criticized the Nigerian government’s failure to appoint governing councils for federal universities, accusing President Tinubu’s administration of showing a nonchalant attitude toward academic issues in the country’s universities.
During a press briefing at the University of Abuja, ASUU not only issued the strike threat but also rejected the government’s proposed 35 percent salary increase for professors and 25 percent increase for other academic staff in Nigerian universities.
