Finidi Says Super Eagles Will Bounce Back As Winless Streak Continues

Despite dropping crucial points at home against South Africa, Finidi believes his team can steer their qualifying campaign back on track.

Nigeria’s coach, Finidi George, is confident that his team will regain their top form in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers despite extending their winless streak to three matches.

Following their 1-1 draw at home against South Africa in Uyo, Nigeria has yet to secure a win in the qualifiers, placing them fifth out of six teams in Group C with only three points from three matches.

Despite dropping crucial points at home against South Africa, Finidi believes his team can steer their qualifying campaign back on track.

“I am not shaken, I am relaxed, we know what is at stake, we know we have to qualify (for the World Cup), but that does not mean we have to run helter skelter because of the draw,” the 53-year-old said.

“We dropped points and that should not break us, a positive result will change the narrative.

“It is not the best result we wanted, we have to get our heads up and work for the next game (Benin).”

After Nigeria’s loss in the Africa Cup of Nations final and a disappointing beginning to World Cup qualifying, former Nigerian international winger Finidi assumed the permanent coaching role in April. Finidi, who served as assistant to Jose Peseiro for 20 months, stepped up after the Portuguese coach’s departure following Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast in the AFCON final.

The Super Eagles are set to face Benin in Abidjan on Monday, aiming to revitalize their World Cup qualifying campaign before the break until March 2025.
