The group of 27 lawmakers supportive of Wike, led by Martins Amaewhule, switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. They sought legal intervention to prevent their seats from being declared vacant.

A three-member panel of the appeal court, convening virtually on Friday, postponed the hearing of the main issue to June 20, 2024.

The panel cautioned both sides against actions that could influence the core matter and instructed that the defendants receive notice of the appeal before the next hearing. Amaewhule, representing twenty-six others, is disputing the ruling of the Rivers State High Court, which nullified their positions and barred them from legislative activities.

The state High Court upheld Victor Oko-Jumbo as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and invalidated all legislation passed by Amaewhule and his group. Oko-Jumbo contends that the 27 lawmakers forfeited their seats in the State Assembly upon defection, citing Section 109 (1) (g) of the Nigerian Constitution.
