Embattled Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, has stated that he has not received adequate support from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
He also mentioned that it was impossible to sanction certain players who have connections with influential individuals.
Finidi made these remarks during a meeting with NFF officials and Sports Minister John Enoh in Abuja, where they reviewed the Super Eagles’ struggling 2026 World Cup campaign. This review followed their 1-1 draw with South Africa in Uyo and a surprising 2-1 defeat by Benin in Abidjan.
To emphasise his point about the lack of commitment from Nigeria’s top players, Finidi cited the example of Victor Osimhen. The Napoli striker was absent for the crucial World Cup qualifiers, officially due to a four-week injury, but Finidi suggested he could have played despite the injury, according to The Nation.
“The coach went on to say that it appears that Osimhen chooses the games he plays for Nigeria and he (Finidi) cannot beg him to play for his country.”
The former Enyimba coach also lamented the complete breakdown of discipline within the team and expressed deep disappointment with how the players casually arrived at the training camp for the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
He mentioned that many players had the support of influential NFF Board members, making it difficult to impose sanctions on them, as he was often warned that a player “belonged” to a certain “big man.”
Waffi TV had reported that Nigerians called for Finidi’s dismissal following his poor performance in the matches he managed.
The NFF also announced that it was seeking a foreign technical adviser to oversee the remaining Super Eagles’ qualifying matches.
