The 36 state governors in Nigeria are set to convene in Abuja on Wednesday to address issues surrounding the proposed new minimum wage. Earlier, they had opposed the federal government’s suggestion of N62,000, citing concerns that some states might have to borrow money to cover salary payments if such an increase were implemented.
Meanwhile, organized labor continues to push for a minimum wage of N250,000. The emergency meeting of the governors follows the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) postponement of its decision on the minimum wage issue, which was announced on Tuesday. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained to reporters that the FEC’s decision-making process involves local governments, state governments, the federal government, and the organized private sector.
Halima Ahmed, the acting Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), informed Daily Trust that the governors will gather at 7pm on Wednesday in Abuja to deliberate on this matter.
