Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) and former Governor of Kano State, recently visited Mallam Nasir El-Rufai at his residence in Abuja. This meeting follows El-Rufai’s recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.
El-Rufai, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been engaging with opposition figures lately, while Kwankwaso’s visit appears to be part of broader efforts to forge alliances and potentially challenge the incumbent president, Bola Tinubu, amidst growing concerns over the country’s economic and socio-political situation.
These consultations and realignments could indicate a shifting political landscape as stakeholders respond to Nigeria’s worsening conditions.
In March, El-Rufai also visited the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja.
Kwankwaso who shared the picture of himself and El-Rufai on his official X account, wrote: “Pleased to pay a cordial visit to my former colleague, H.E Nasir El-Rufai, at his residence in Abuja today. – RMK.”
According to reports on Thursday, former federal lawmaker and human rights activist Senator Shehu Sani claimed that northern political forces are planning to leverage Buhari to undermine President Tinubu’s government.
Speaking in an interview on Arise News TV, Sani, although without providing evidence, mentioned signs of political forces from the North rallying and regrouping.
He alleged that the strategy involves using Buhari as a focal point to challenge President Tinubu’s leadership.
He said, “It is a tradition, a culture, a norm or a ritual that each time you have a Sallah celebration, prominent people do visit the former President of this country, but I must clear the air by making a point.
“First of all, there is evidence of rallying of forces, regrouping of political forces from the North trying to use former President Buhari as a rally point in order to evict the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.”
