The Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) announced it has initiated a peace accord to be signed by the chairmen of ten political parties participating in the July 13 local government elections in the state.
The commission stated that the chairmanship candidates of these political parties and law enforcement agencies in the state are also expected to participate in the signing, which is scheduled for tomorrow at its headquarters.
DSIEC Chairman, Dr. Jerry Agbaike, made this announcement in Asaba, the state capital, during a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists organized by the commission in conjunction with the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
He emphasized that the Commission is guided by strong principles of equity, justice, fairness, and high integrity as impartial arbiters to ensure the conduct of free, fair, transparent, credible, and peaceful elections.
Agbaike also revealed that a critical criterion for selecting its ad-hoc staff for the July 13, 2024, local government elections is that they must not be members of any political party.
He said the ad-hoc staff “must be persons of unquestionable character and should not be biased against any political aspirant or political party, should not be persons with criminal records, etc.
“Security and law enforcement agencies are already collaborating with DSIEC to neutralize and diminish political-threats, provide adequate security and ensure a peaceful election.”
