The NFF would practically need to break the Central Bank of Nigeria to hire the highly sought-after Herve Renard as the next coach of the Super Eagles. This comes after the French coach demanded a monthly salary of $180,000 (around N253 million), along with several other conditions.
A top official said, “Yes, the NFF have made contact with Renard for the Super Eagles job, but the biggest stumbling block is that he is demanding a salary of $180,000 (a month), which in Naira is almost close to 300 Million.
“This will be the highest ever paid to a coach and the NFF just cannot afford this.
“This may well be a wild goose chase.”
Egypt has reportedly offered Renard $1.9 million, and his name has been mentioned in discussions about the new coach for the United States of America. The 54-year-old coach has previously won the AFCON with Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire.
It’s worth recalling that Jose Peseiro, the immediate past foreign coach of the Super Eagles, had to accept a significant pay cut to extend his contract until the delayed AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire. Peseiro initially earned $70,000 a month as the Super Eagles coach, which was later reduced to $50,000, and he was still owed for up to 13 months at times.
Sports Minister John Enoh has emphasized that it is the responsibility of the NFF to fund a foreign coach for the national team.
