The House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule has halted all expenditures by Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State until he presents his budget to the House. This decision follows a seven-day ultimatum issued by lawmakers for the governor to submit the 2024 budget.
During the session, Major Jack, the House Leader, informed members about the expiration of the ultimatum. Subsequently, after deliberation, the House voted to freeze the Rivers State Consolidated Revenue Account, preventing any further spending by Governor Fubara’s administration on behalf of the state.
This action was taken following the expiry of the ultimatum concerning the re-submission of the annual budget to the legislators. The Amaewhule-led assembly issued this directive during their first meeting following a break.
Previously, Fubara had presented the budget to a group of legislators loyal to him during Edison Ehie’s tenure as House Speaker, who is now the governor’s chief of staff. Ehie and the legislators approved the budget estimates, which Fubara subsequently signed into law.
