Final-Year Bayelsa Varsity Student Allegedly Killed Over N150 ‘Fun Levy’

A final-year student at Bayelsa State’s Niger Delta University (NDU) on Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, has reportedly been killed by local youths over a N150 levy.

The student, identified as Francis Palowei from the Department of Social Science Education, was allegedly attacked at a sand dump, a popular local relaxation spot.

It is reported that youths in the community have been imposing levies on students frequenting the area due to its popularity. On Monday evening, Palowei and his friends visited the spot. When they were asked to pay N500 instead of the usual N150, an argument ensued. The situation escalated when the youths, including known cultists, attacked and killed Palowei.

A source described the deceased as a promising young man, the son of a high-ranking police officer from Obrigbene Town in Ekeremor Local Government Area. His death has left his family, friends, and the university community in mourning.

The Public Relations Officer of Niger Delta University, Mr. Ndoni Igezi, confirmed the incident, calling it unfortunate. He stated that the police are working to prevent further escalation. He also explained that while the owner of the sand dump does not charge fees, local youths typically collect N150 to allow people to climb to the top.

The spokesperson for the Bayelsa State Police Command, ASP Musa Muhammed, also confirmed the incident. He reported that the Commissioner of Police has deployed additional security personnel to restore calm and order. Police are currently conducting a manhunt to arrest the suspects involved in the killing.
