The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has warned motorists against transporting petrol in jerrycans to avoid fire hazards.
State Sector Commander Dr. Samuel Ibitoye issued the caution on Monday during an interview with NAN in Akure. He highlighted that some drivers, due to petrol shortages, are transporting fuel in jerrycans, which poses significant dangers.
Ibitoye mentioned that on Sunday, a commercial bus loaded with three jerrycans of petrol (each containing 25 liters) was intercepted. The bus was traveling from Lagos to Jalingo in Taraba.
Although the vehicle was allowed to continue after refueling at a nearby station, Ibitoye noted that the FRSC does not have the authority to seize such vehicles outright. He commended the passengers for alerting the FRSC national headquarters, which then notified all state commands.
He urged passengers to participate in road safety efforts and emphasized the FRSC’s ongoing commitment to educate drivers and prevent accidents.
“As a passenger inside a vehicle, you are expected to get involved in road traffic management, and not get involved in distracting the driver. You should get involved to add value to road safety.
“This passenger knew that if there was a slight spark inside the vehicle and it caught fire, all of them would get burnt to ashes.
“So, we want passengers to be involved and also to discourage drivers from carrying fuel in jerrycans inside their vehicles.
“It is better to wait a little time to queue for fuel than buying fuel inside a jerrycan, and at the end of the day, if there is an explosion in the vehicle, everyone will burn to ashes.
“We are appealing to all Nigerians, if you have fuel challenges, do not buy fuel inside a jerrycan and put it inside your vehicle because we don’t want you to die in an inferno or to affect other road users that are just passing by.
