The Federal Government has disbursed N3 billion to states impacted by recent flood disasters across the country to help alleviate the suffering of affected citizens.
This announcement was made on Wednesday during the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja.
Vice President Kashim Shettima chaired the meeting, which was attended by governors, deputy governors, and several ministers. Also present were Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited, who both made presentations.
After the meeting, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed briefed reporters, noting that some northern states were hardest hit by the floods, resulting in loss of life and significant property damage. He added that the N3 billion is intended to provide immediate relief to flood victims, including food and temporary shelter for those displaced.
Governor Mohammed also revealed that NEC directed the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to coordinate efforts towards a comprehensive approach to tackling flood disasters in the country. In addition, NEC ordered an inventory to assess the full extent of the flood damage.
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule informed the press that the NEC Committee on Flood has been restructured, with Vice President Shettima now serving as chairman. The committee includes governors from Kogi, Bauchi, Jigawa, Oyo, Ebonyi, and Bayelsa States, as well as the Ministers of State for Water Resources and representatives from relevant government agencies.
