How North Korea Leader Orders Execution Of 30 Govt Officials For Deaths Caused By Floods

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly executed up to 30 officials over their alleged failure to prevent deadly flooding and landslides that resulted in about 1,000 deaths.

South Korean media reports indicate that Kim held the officials accountable for the “unacceptable loss” of life and demanded severe punishment. The executions are said to have occurred in late August, with charges including corruption and neglect of duty.

While the officials’ identities have not been revealed, North Korean state media confirmed that Kang Bong-hoon, a senior provincial leader, was among those dismissed.

Kim Jong Un had previously visited the disaster-stricken areas, acknowledging the severe damage and suggesting that rebuilding could take months. The government also set up shelters for displaced people, including vulnerable groups, in Pyongyang.

Despite these efforts, Kim Jong Un dismissed high death toll reports as “false rumours” spread by South Korea to damage North Korea’s reputation.

Reports suggest that public executions in North Korea have increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, with the annual rate reportedly rising tenfold, according to South Korean sources.

Officials in North Korea are under heightened scrutiny as the regime intensifies its crackdown on those held responsible for recent calamities.
