World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has revealed plans to pursue another four-year term.
In a Monday interview with Reuters, she expressed her desire to address “unfinished business” from her initial term. Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister, began her role in March 2021 as the first female and African leader of the 30-year-old organization. Her current term ends on August 31, 2025.
She said, “I would like to be part of this chapter of the WTO story, and I stand ready to compete for the position,” Okonjo-Iweala said, citing a letter she plans to send to the trade body’s main decision-making body.
“For my second term, I intend to focus on delivering,” she added, mentioning that among her priorities are addressing “unfinished business.”
Her priorities encompass finalizing a fisheries subsidy deal, advancing global agriculture negotiations, overhauling the WTO’s dispute resolution system, and decarbonizing trade. She has until the end of November to make her decision on reapplying.
