Israel-Hezbollah Conflict: Over 500 Killed In Southern Lebanon

A Lebanese security source reported that an Israeli strike hit Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut on Tuesday. The Israeli military confirmed it had carried out the strike, following a similar attack the previous day.

“An Israeli strike targeted two floors of a residential building in the Ghobeiri area,” said the source, who spoke anonymously due to the sensitivity of the situation. The Israeli army also confirmed a strike on Beirut but withheld further details. “The IDF conducted a targeted strike in Beirut. Details to follow,” they said.

Lebanon’s health ministry reported that at least 558 people, including 50 children and 94 women, have been killed in southern Lebanon. The World Health Organization added that four healthcare workers were killed, and 16 paramedics were injured.

An AFP photographer at the scene confirmed that two floors of a residential building were destroyed, with nearby cars also damaged. On Monday, Israel had carried out a “targeted strike” in Beirut.

Hezbollah stated that its third-in-command, Ali Karake, had survived the strike and moved to safety, despite earlier reports indicating he was the target.

Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in almost daily cross-border exchanges since the Gaza war began last October. On Monday, Israel launched widespread attacks across southern and eastern Lebanon, resulting in over 550 deaths, the highest single-day toll since the 2006 Hezbollah-Israel war. These strikes followed deadly explosions last week, which killed 39 people and wounded thousands.

The violence escalated with a strike on Friday in southern Beirut, killing senior Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil.
