France’s World Cup champion Raphael Varane announced his retirement from football on Tuesday at the age of 31.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United center-back had signed with Italian club Como for the current season but was left out of their Serie A squad due to a knee injury sustained in August.
“A new life begins off the pitch,” Varane said on social media.
“I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads.
“Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon,” the four-time Champions League winner added.
