Senate Confirms Kekere-Ekun As Second Female CJN

The Senate has confirmed Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Her confirmation followed a screening by Senators during a Committee of the Whole session on Wednesday.

Justice Kekere-Ekun arrived at the Senate chamber at 12:30 PM, and the screening began at 12:47 PM, concluding at 2:41 PM. She was accompanied by other Justices from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal after Senator Bamidele cited Order 12 of the Senate Standing Orders, allowing her and other visitors to enter. This was seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Senator Oyewumi Olalere, PDP, Osun West.

The Special Adviser to the President on Senate, Senator Basheer Lado, led her in. Prior to the screening, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, APC, Ekiti Central, moved to prioritize Kekere-Ekun’s screening in the day’s legislative agenda.

With this confirmation, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun becomes the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria, following Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who served from July 2012 to November 2014. She had been acting in the role since the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola and was nominated by the National Judicial Council (NJC) to President Tinubu on August 15. During her Senate questioning, the then-Acting CJN pledged a zero-tolerance policy for corruption within the judiciary, emphasizing her commitment to integrity and efficiency. She vowed to expedite court petitions and to insulate the judiciary from external influences, while also advocating for improved welfare and infrastructure for judicial staff.

Justice Kekere-Ekun also highlighted the importance of strengthening national institutions and public behavior around elections to reduce litigation related to electoral matters.

President Bola Tinubu formally requested the Senate’s screening and confirmation of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as CJN in a letter read by Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio upon the chamber’s return from its annual recess in July.
