The Delta State Government has issued a stern warning to medical personnel providing family planning services to underage girls, urging them to desist or face prosecution.
The warning was delivered by the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General (AG), Ohwovoriole Ekemejero SAN, during the World Contraception Day event held on Thursday in Asaba, the state capital.
Ohwovoriole, represented by the Director of Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Unit, Mrs. Patricia Akanagwuna, emphasized that offering such services to minors without parental or guardian consent is illegal, and violators will face legal consequences.
“In the eye of the law, any medical doctor that provides family planning for minors will face prosecution.
“The law did not permit such, the doctor must seek the consent of the parents or guardians.”
He, however, advised medical personnel to uphold the principle of allowing individual women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health, free from coercion or judgment, while also protecting their right to confidentiality when accessing contraceptive services.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, highlighted that the family planning town hall meeting, held in commemoration of World Contraception Day, aimed to raise awareness about every individual’s right to make personal health choices. He encouraged women to adopt family planning for their well-being.
