Finance Minister Wale Edun announced that the Federal Government has devised a strategy to boost domestic agricultural production and enhance food security.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, marking the nation’s 64th Independence Day, Edun emphasized the need to end heavy reliance on food imports, declaring it a key element in the government’s economic recovery plan.
“We should not be importing food,” Edun stated, stressing that Nigeria’s future lies in self-sufficiency.
He stated that the government is fully committed to supporting small-scale farmers by providing essential inputs such as seeds and fertilizer through programs like the Nigerian Agricultural Growth Scheme.
Additionally, he highlighted that the government’s initiative will focus on improving both wet and dry season harvests, aiming to reduce the need for imports in the short term while increasing productivity in the long term.
As a temporary measure, the government has authorized maize and wheat imports to stabilize the food market. However, Edun emphasized the need to balance this with boosting domestic production.
“It is critical that we do not disrupt domestic production of food. We mustn’t disrupt farming in Nigeria by flooding the market with imports,” he warned.
