On Thursday, the Senate approved the creation of the South West Development Commission after reviewing a report from its Committee on Special Duties.
Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan (APC Borno Central), the committee chairman, presented the South West Development Commission Bill, 2024, which was subsequently passed during its third reading in the Senate plenary.
In his remarks, Kaka emphasized that the bill is designed to effectively promote the socio-economic development of the South West region.
“If the Commission is established through presidential assent to the bill, it will, like other development-driven commissions established on zonal basis, receives funds from the Federation Account, donations from development partners etc to address infrastructural deficits and tackle ecological problems in the region,” he said.
The Senate proceeded into the Committee of the Whole for a clause-by-clause review of the bill, after which it was read for the third time.
Following the bill’s passage, Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, praised the Kaka-led committee for their commendable work.
He stated that the South West Development Commission, like other recently established commissions, would tackle the region’s infrastructural and ecological challenges.
“The essence of the various development commissions being set up is to fast track development of the entire country.
“President Bola Tinubu has assented to similar bills passed for zonal development-driven interventions and will surely assent to this one,” he said.
