30 PhD Holders Resign In Bauchi University Over Poor Salary

At least 30 members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have resigned from Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Bauchi State.

Namo Timothy, the ASUU Zonal Coordinator for Bauchi Zone, disclosed this during a press conference at the university’s Yuli Campus on Friday.

He stated that the state-owned Sa’adu Zungur University is on the brink of collapse due to the mismanagement of its affairs and the neglect of staff welfare. Timothy urged the Bauchi State government to declare a state of emergency at the university to address the ongoing issues, warning that the ASUU branch could no longer guarantee peaceful relations with the university administration unless urgent action was taken.

He lamented that SAZU ASUU members lack pension and death benefit schemes, which are standard in other public institutions across Nigeria.

Furthermore, Timothy revealed that the university owes its members over N650 million in Earned Academic Allowance and Excess Work Load Allowance dating back to 2012.

He also criticized the appointment of a Higher National Diploma (HND) graduate as the university’s Bursar, a position which, according to university regulations, requires a minimum of a first degree.

“The zone has engaged key stakeholders and exchanged several correspondences in an attempt to resolve these issues to no avail.

“This has not only dampened the morale of our members in the university but forced many, including 30 trained PhD holders to resign and migrate to other institutions where their future is secured,” he added.
