The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) have urged President Bola Tinubu to focus on addressing national challenges rather than merely reshuffling his cabinet.
As President Tinubu prepares for a cabinet overhaul, ministers and their supporters have intensified efforts to retain their positions.
Reacting to the development, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, called on the President to review his current policies.
Ologunagba stated, “The PDP has emphasised multiple times that a government focused on its citizens should have been cautious about the detrimental effects of hastily implemented policies. These include the sudden increase in petroleum prices and the arbitrary floating of the naira.
“Such decisions should have been accompanied by adequate measures to safeguard the well-being of the people, rather than being carried out without proper consideration of their impact. Therefore, these policies should be reviewed.”
NNPP Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, voiced his approval of President Tinubu’s plan to reshuffle the cabinet, urging that it be done swiftly. In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Johnson also criticised the current trajectory of the country under the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government.
He stated, “It is a welcome development because, as far as most Nigerians are concerned, we are not saying that things are not happening, but a lot of Nigerians don’t see things going in the right direction. And the buck stops at the president’s table.
“So, if he chooses not to reshuffle his cabinet, or if he’s waiting for mid-term, which is two years away, then the performance results of the ministers who are not doing well are his results. If he had a free hand in appointing his ministers, then whatever scorecard the ministers have reflects his scorecards as well.
“Beyond the cabinet reshuffle, I think he urgently needs to sit down with his team, understand what is going on in the country, and press the reset button regarding some of his policies or the basic foundation of his policies.”
Similarly, CUPP National Secretary, Peter Ameh, urged President Tinubu to assemble a competent economic team.
Ameh stressed that “as the President appoints replacements for the ministers who will be dismissed, he should prioritise competence and the ability to deliver.”
He said, “He has to get the economic team in place because all these irrational and impulsive policy decisions, which are not well thought out or planned, are the result of our current woes.
“He should have people coordinating the economy properly. If he’s going to talk about a cabinet reshuffle, it should be devoid of political and ethnic affiliations; it should focus solely on competence, performance, and the ability to deliver for the people.”
