President Joe Biden on Tuesday directed the U.S. military to “support Israel’s defense” and intercept Iranian missiles aimed at Israel, according to the White House.
Both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for next month’s U.S. presidential election, are monitoring Iran’s assault on Israel from the White House situation room, the statement added.
“President Biden directed the US military to aid Israel’s defense against Iranian attacks and shoot down missiles that are targeting Israel,” the White House said in a statement.
A White House official announced that President Biden’s scheduled call with rabbis ahead of the Jewish high holidays, starting later this week with Rosh Hashanah, has been postponed.
In April, the U.S. and other Western allies aided Israel in defending against an Iranian missile and drone attack, launched in retaliation for an Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus.
The Incident
On Tuesday, Iran launched missiles at Israel, as confirmed by Israeli military and Iranian state media, escalating tensions after Israeli raids on Iran-backed militants in Lebanon. The Israeli military confirmed missiles were fired from Iran towards Israel. Air raid sirens were heard across the country, with explosions reported in Jerusalem.
Iran’s state-run IRNA said the attack targeted Tel Aviv in retaliation for the deaths of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Nasrallah died in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, while Haniyeh’s death occurred in a Tehran bombing blamed on Israel.
In response, Israel closed its airspace, diverting flights, while Iraq and Jordan followed suit. Explosions were also reported over Amman as Israeli and allied forces intercepted missiles. This escalation followed Israeli military ground raids in southern Lebanon, after Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant discussed the Iranian threat with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, leading to additional U.S. troop deployments.
World leaders, including Russia and China, have called for de-escalation and a ceasefire. The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have voiced concern over the conflict’s toll, with thousands displaced and hundreds of lives lost.
