Nigeria@64: Independence Incomplete Without Resource Control- IYC, Urges FG To Adopt True Federalism

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Western Zone, has asserted that Nigeria’s independence is still incomplete without full control over resources.

The group emphasized that achieving true sovereignty necessitates addressing resource ownership and management, especially for the marginalized Niger Delta region, rich in natural resources.

Comrade Tare Magbei, Information Officer for the IYC Western Zone, made this statement on Monday as the nation celebrated its 64th Independence Day.

He expressed concern that, despite over sixty years of political independence, economic freedom—particularly for resource-rich areas—has been hampered by a lack of control over their resources.

Magbei stressed that genuine federalism involves a fair distribution of power and resources, a concept that is currently far from the reality in Nigeria today.

“The current structure promotes economic imbalance, with regions that contribute the most to the national economy receiving the least benefits,” he said.

The youth leader argued that granting resource control would enable local governments and communities to develop independently, ensuring that wealth generated within a region is utilized to enhance the lives of its people.

He noted that this is fundamental to true federalism, which acknowledges the rights of each federating unit to manage its own resources while still contributing to the federal revenue.

Magbei concluded by urging the Nigerian government to swiftly adopt true federalism as the only sustainable remedy to the country’s numerous challenges.

“Until the regions are granted full control of their resources, Nigeria’s independence will remain incomplete. True federalism, which guarantees resource control, is essential for fairness, unity, and long-term national development.”
